The rehearsal went off without a hitch, even the part where Pastor Williams told Jason he could practice kissing his bride, and before long, everyone, his family and hers, was gathered at her parents’ house for dinner and drinks.

She’d lived here her entire life, and loved the big, old house, but as she and Jason roamed from room to room, saying hello to everyone in attendance and making introductions, she couldn’t help but wish they were at his house, sitting on the sofa watching television.

Her younger crowd of cousins, and Jason’s, were gathered in the dining room near the food and drink tables, and as they arrived in that room, Jason asked, “Why didn’t you go out east to college? Joe and all of your cousins have.”

Before Randi could answer, Wendy laughed.

“Because all she ever wanted was here,” Wendy said.

Although she wanted to give her cousin a glare to shut her up, Randi couldn’t. Wendy thought this all was on the up and up, therefore, she had little choice but to shrug at Jason.

The conversation quickly changed to another topic, and another and another.

The entire group was in the midst of laughing, when someone shouted, “Late but still great!”

Randi instantly recognized the voice, and so did half of the others in the room because shouts of “Gus!” echoed off the ceiling.

The big blond buffoon that he was, Gus made a beeline for her and lifted her off the floor into one of his big bear hugs. “My flight had a layover in Minneapolis and was delayed because of snow.”

She returned his hug. “You should have flown Air America.”

He laughed and put her down. “I did!” He then shook Jason’s hand. “Hey, man, still agitating the gravel?” Slapping Jason’s shoulder, Gus continued. “Do you still have that souped-up red Chevy with the V-8?”

“Yes,” Jason answered.

“Dig it! That car’s cherry! Still drag racing?”

“When I have time,” Jason replied.

“Me, too. You should bring that Chevy out to California. We got some screaming drag racing out there, and we can ride motorcycles along the coast year-round.” Gus looked at her again. “I can’t believe you didn’t tell me about this when you were in California.”

“Because you can’t keep secrets,” she lied.

“I kept your secret for years.” He chucked her under the chin. “Congratulations, kid. I’m happy for you.” Turning to Jason, he said, “Good luck, man.” Winking at her, he added, “You’ll need it.” Laughing at his own joke, Gus moved on, saying hello to others by shaking the men’s hands and giving every girl a big bear hug, whether he knew them or not.

“He always makes an entrance,” she told Jason, who was looking at her quizzically. She’d never told Gus she’d had a crush on Jason, but had the gut feeling that Gus had known. Just like her mother had. Perhaps she hadn’t been as discreet about that as she’d thought.

Jason’s gaze followed Gus, with a somewhat contrite expression. “He’s a likable guy.”

“If you like someone who doesn’t have a serious bone in his body,” she replied.
